Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Quick Hit: Three girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities. They must try to escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th. – IMDB
THE GOOD: JAMES F’N MCAVOY
This was Oscar quality stuff right here. The man plays several (very) different personalities over the course of the film. We are not talking about Eddie Murphy in the Klumps where each is a caricature of the last. This is no prosthesis, no makeup, no CGI… straight raw acting ability bringing different people to life in one body. Amazing stuff.
THE BAD: M NIGHT ACTING
We get it… you are in your own movies. Stop the one man circle jerk and just stay behind the camera. Every time I see you in anything, it pulls me out of the moment.
MORE GOOD: SEQUEL TEASE
Normally sequel baiting is annoying but there is something exciting waiting for you at the end of this one. You may need to dust off your thinking cap to get everything out of the final reveal, but If you are an M Night fan, prepare for greatness.
MORE BAD: ANTI CLIMATIC
The same ending I just raved about save what otherwise is sort of a let down. The film ends the most poetic way possible, but it does feel a bit “easy” after everything that we had sat through previously.
OVERALL: TENSION – DO YOU FEEL IT?!
This movie goes as McAvoy goes, plain and simple. It really is not a traditional HORROR movie, more a suspense thriller. All that tension rests on the shoulders and believability on the lead. If he is anything less than stellar, this is NOT a runaway hit… it’s a dumpster fire. M Night is firmly back in the driver’s seat of his career now and it feels good to honestly say I look forward to his next project! But for the love of all that is holy, please keep him away from The Last Airbender! Split gets:
