Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron

Director: Seth Gordon

Quick Hit: Devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchanan butts heads with a brash new recruit. Together, they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay. ~ IMDB.com

The Good: This movie knows exactly what it wants to be.  It sets the tone right from the opening credits.  The laughs come early and often.  It fits right in the mold of the “old show turned comedy” sub genre (ie. 21 Jump Street, Dukes of Hazard, Starsky & Hutch).  Dwayne Johnson is his normal charming self.  Zach Efron turns in a pretty good performance, having to play both the straight man and the douchey jock scene to scene.  Ensemble cast members all get their opportunity to shine as Johnson and Efron do not NEED to carry this film alone.  The old show seemed like an excuse to get pretty people into a little clothing as possible… and nothing changes in that department… plenty of gratuitous abs, booty, and boobie shots for all.  Im actually a little surprised how often they covered Johnson and Efron.  Maybe its the whole “Hollywood is a boys club” things shining through, but women are literally half the population… if you have the opportunity to film countless shirtless Rock and Efron scenes… you do it! #FieldOfDreamsVoice If you film it… they will come.

that was NOT a double entendre… minds out the gutter!

The Bad: Maybe it was me… maybe it was the crowd that I screened the film with… but a LOT of the jokes did not laugh.  Now granted, they get a lot of genuine belly laughs throughout… but there were SO MANY that just got a chuckle or a “hmm… yea thats funny”.  This movie, at points, made me feel the real life equivalent of texting “LMMFAO” but looking at your phone like…

Not trying to make the film sound bad at all, but I felt like they set there sights as an even funnier, edgier 21 Jump Street and I do not feel like they hit that mark. They go to the well one too many times with a few of their gags… not helping if they weren’t  all that funny the first time.  Also… not sure if this was the desired effect or not, but the plot was UBER predictable.

OVERALL: I won’t go into any spoiler since this movie still yet to be released at the time, but I will say it IS probably worth the price of admission… you know, if hot people being funny half naked and solving crimes is your thing.  Go have a good time, but temper your expectations for good… not great.  Side note: there is a pretty good gag reel at the end… stay at least for that.  This movie gets the first ever TSP – It’s Ok Badge of Distinction.
