Three big movies hit this weekend… let’s get you ready for the box office lines!
#1 – Manchester By The Sea
Casey “Im more than Ben’s Brother” Affleck stars in this Oscar buzzing tale about a man who is willed to be the legal guardian of his nephew after his brother’s untimely demise. HOLIDAY CHEER, RIGHT?! If you are into character pieces, I’ve heard there are nothing short of dynamic performances from the entire cast… but get ready to have the Kleenex on deck.
#2 – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Felicity Jones leads star studded cast in a film being described as “Saving Private Ryan meets Star Wars”. Set before the events of Episode IV: A New Hope, the very first Star Wars anthology film promises a gritty look at how the rebel alliance originally got their hands on the Death Star plans.
#3 – Collateral Beauty
Will Smith’s Howard (no last name) is a successful ad exec that get’s smacked hard with the harsh realities of life. To cope, he begins to write letters to (the abstract concepts of) Love, Time, and Death. In a twist of fate… they respond. Early reports say this is Will Smith’s best performance since The Pursuit of Happyness. Surrounded by talent galore, this is supposed to be a great emotional ride.
MY VOTE – ROGUE ONE
It’s simple… Manchester I’ve heard is great, but emotionally taxing. I’m not trying to leave the theater feeling all simp and mopey around Christmas. Same goes for Collateral Beauty. Will Smith is great. With the exception of After Earth, he pretty much does no wrong… but Disney has changed the game forever. Big FX heavy spectacle films are supposed to be June – August. NOPE! Between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Star Wars Universe, Disney has committed to giving you that summer time heat whenever they damn well please. Rogue One trailers have been amazing, I need to see Darth Vader in action again, I want Blind Jedi (not really a Jedi) fights, and I’m excited to see such a different take on the Star Wars material. When I hit the theater this weekend, I’m handing my money over and saying “YOU KNOW WHY IM HERE”! Rogue One gets:
